Music: Chart-toppers Westlife's last single heading in One Direction... Down!

rightWestlife's Shane Filan has admitted that his band's new single has little or no chance in getting to number one. If it does reach the top of the charts, it would be Westlife's 15th triumph on the number 1 spot.

And who is to blame? Yes they are actually playing the blame game! - Apparently it is the fault of none other than Mr. Simon Cowell.

The four-piece manband bitterly dumped Simon Cowell's label Syco back in March this year ahead of their recent plans to retire, while currently Cowell is injecting all his energy into new boyband One Direction. Having planned to release One Direction's brand new single in direct competition with Westlife's, the 'lifers' see this as Cowell's revenge for leaving Syco and signing a lucrative deal with RCA.

Both Kian Egan and Mark Feehily have revealed that they see themselves now as too old to compete with teen whippersnappers like One Direction. 32-year-old 'Geriatric' Shane Filan has conceded the number 1 slot to the X Factor sensations.

"I can't honestly see the 15th No.1 happen with 'Lighthouse'. It's not the song itself but because we are out against One Direction " he explained. They are the new big thing and we know what that's like. There was a time when we were those guys and nobody, not even the Spice Girls could match us".

It seems that their old record company has decided to create a bit of a stir by releasing the younger boys single out against theirs and while it's all great publicity for them, Kian Egan reckons his bandmates "are honestly just laughing at it because it's what we did 10 years ago.. an ambush and it's brilliant"

Sounds to me like the old-timers Westlife were banking on a last ditch attempt at a pension top-up! Poor things!
