Eamon Gilmore must have been delighted with the results of the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll. Not only has he held on to the title of most popular party leader in Irish politics (46pc) but The Labour Party have been voted most popular for the first time ever in history!

The poll was taken on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week among a representative sample of 1,000 voters aged 18 and over, in face-to-face interviews at 100 sampling points in all 43 constituencies. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 per cent.

The standing of the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parties has dropped substantially. Fianna Fáil has dropped back to the record low it reached last September while the position of the Government and Taoiseach has fallen sharply over the past six months.

Party leaders Brian Cowen (FF) and Enda Kenny (FG) both plunged in their personal ratings along with their parties. It looks like Cowen has more to worry about with the release of two financial reports into the banking crisis coming to the forefront soon. These reports are based on his time as Finance Minister in which there have been many criticisms already.

When people were asked who they would vote for if there were a general election tomorrow, the adjusted figures for party support, compared with the previous Irish Times poll on January 20th last were: Fianna Fáil, 17 per cent (down five points); Fine Gael, 28 per cent (down four points); Labour, 32 per cent (up eight points); Sinn Féin, 9 per cent (up one point); Green Party, 3 per cent (no change); and Independents/ Others, 11 per cent (no change).

Gilmore's Labour Party are clearly connecting to the anger amongst voters on the economic downturn, Fianna Fáil's handling of government accounts and the many tax cuts they have administered as a result of their own mismanagement. Despite Fianna Fáil's best efforts to remain at the top and defiantly disrespect the ordinary working person, it seems a change in leadership may ensue. Bring it on I say..aye aye
