Movies: My 'Top 10 Favourite Childhood Movies'
On a sentimental whim I decided to ponder my all-time favourite movies. Understandably, to downsize such an extensive memory of multiple genres and classic movie moments that mean something to me is a very difficult feat indeed.
On doing so, I realised the most enjoyable movies - the ones that still 'float my boat' are the ones that I would watch over and over again. Conceivably, they were all the hilariously entertaining movies I had been watching since and throughout my childhood because let's be honest, they were the best! So even though I have many favourite movies, genres of movies and sub-genres of movies (over-achievers minds tend to be very departmental !!) I decided to just focus on those old childhood favourites!
Even though it was near impossible to compile a Top 10 of anything (!) Grease has to be my all-time favourite movie. The very young John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Face Off) and Olivia Newton-John (Xanadu) shine spectacularly as Danny and Sandy and Stockard Channing (The West Wing) is brilliant as the unforgettable rebel 'Rizzo'. It has everything - young pretty people, a good range of characters, humour, goofiness, a love story, great costumes, car chases, competition, singing and dancing (if you like that kind of thing) and the storylines contained a wee dose of reality too i.e. first love, peer pressure, teenage pregnancy, first-time sex, hanging out and having fun with the guys and the girls..
As for the rest of the chosen ten, some I like for the same reasons and then some for others. Matthew Broderick in probably his best role to date(!) as the irrepressible 'Ferris Bueller' still cracks me up to this day. How did he manage to charm his way through that whole day off school and only his sister wise to him?! Michael J. Fox (my first crush) in the first instalment of the 'Back to the Future' Trilogy still entertains - this WILL be the first introduction of time travel to my baby son when he's older! As you can see, I was a massive John Hughes fan (R.I.P.) The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles were his classically more realistic depictions of high school teen-angst offerings - Molly Ringwald seemingly acting as his muse!
Daryl Hannah as 'Madison' the mermaid blew many a mind back in 1984's Splash (particularly the guys) while also launching the careers and witticisms of Tom Hanks and John Candy. Speaking of career launching - if you haven't seen Eddie Murphy in 'Coming to America', Elisabeth Shue's leading lady debut in 'Adventures In Babysitting' and Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in the electrifying 'Dirty Dancing' - where have you seriously been?!! You need to turn them on and get those hips moving.. All of these movies are genuinely guaranteed to put a smile on your face. It is a nostalgic quirky trip I wanted to share so I hope you comment and share yours too !!
