Ireland: The A-Z Irish Glossary - 'S' is for Shenanigans

left'Shenanigans'

Meaning mischief, horseplay, tomfoolery, pranks.. tends to involve groups of people up to no good! Considerably another word with equal meaning could be 'Bullshit'!

Also an official declaration made by patrons of an establishment who feel they have been cheated (out of fun being had by other people).

Once a charge of shenanigans has been accepted by an authority figure, said patrons are free to assault the owners of said establishment with brooms.

The pub advertisement (left) attempts to describe the idea of what Shenanigans are through local promotion of its entertainment events, though the traditional idea behind 'Shenanigans' is that it usually involves something comical, crazy and entertaining yet is quite hidden, secretive and takes on a life of joviality all of its own that no-one really knows how far it will go and how dangerous it will get!!
