Technology: Virgin's in Space....!
Virgin'ssss...Innnn...Spaaaace..!!!! Forget the Muppet Show's Miss Piggy and the 'pigs in space' crew - Have you checked out VirginGalactic.com? Just in case you are stuck on what Christmas present you would like to give or receive this year (or maybe thirty years from now for the majority of us) You too can now "book your place in space" on the Virgin Galactic spaceship along with other venturing astronauts for a mere $200,000 !!!
Yes just like the Star Trek voyagers, you too can become a member of the fleet and orbit the earth - well at least grab a passenger seat anyway providing you bestow a princely deposit of $20,000 of course! 340 aspiring astronauts have already booked this ultimate space travel experience courtesy of entrepreneur visionary Sir Richard Branson.
Not entirely satisfied with commercial airline travel, the Virgin Atlantic boss founded Virgin Galactic with the view to making space travel commercially available. Branson was delighted when the construction of the very first commercial spaceship called the VSS Enterprise was complete last December and a test flight programme has been under way for the best part of 2010.
The VSS Enterprise had its first 'captive carry' flight in March this year which was a huge success and developer Burt Rutan described it as a momentous day, that 'both the mothership
and spaceship looked absolutely stunning against the blue back drop of
the Mojave skies'. In July for the first time, it flew with its first crew on board.
The VSS Enterprise test flight programme will
continue though 2010 and 2011, progressing from captive carry to
independent glide and then powered flight, prior to the start of
commercial operations. Forget seatbelts, strap on those space suits and oxygen masks squadron and get ready for blast off!!
